Ash - Abhishek Wedding and Media

Last few days most of the newschannels (esp. Hindi) were showing only one news. Shaadi of the year (or should I say decade, century...)!. Coverage on channels like Aaj Tak, Star News was simply ridiculous. They were telecasting as if it is the only news that Indians are interested in. Agreed it was a headline, but not worth the importance it received. Times of India, so called leading paper in Mumbai, alloted more than half of its first page for the news. Newspapers and news channels are giving up their responsibility of being 'The Fourth Pillar of Democracy" and are morphing into yet another medium of entertainment.

But I am amazed by a completely different aspect of Ash-Abhishek wedding. I am amazed by the amount of rituals and pujas performed before engagement and the amount of coverage it receieved. Aishwarya is maangalik and hence they performed a series of pujas at the Kashi Vishwanath temple and Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi. I find this simply ridiculous. We are leaving in modern age. Education must inculcate scientific attitude in learned and they do away with such ideas. Media and role models in society are supposed to create awareness among people to develope such rational mindset. On the contrary, Amitabh Bachchan, role model for many Indians, is performing such rituals and media is abating by giving it unnecessary coverage. Not a single newspaper or news channel raised this issue. On the contrary, they portaryed it as if it was one of the necessary events before the wedding.

Media has to play more active role in eradicating such irrational traditions and practices. Newspapers have, over the years, been successful in creating awareness among masses against such traditions. They must live upto that tradition.

PS: Just my father pointed out that maangalik issue was portrayed in right perspective in latest blockbuster 'Lage Raho Munnabahi'. And the irony is that Abhishek Bachchan is shown marrying to a maangalik girl against the wishes of his father and ctiticises such traditions. Time to replicate the Reel life into Real life!

yes I completely agree with you. I think that newspapers and media people dont have any thing 'special' to write about so they are focussing on this ash and abhishek issue ...as if it is of national concern. but simply they are doing this because of a group of readers who are interested in the lives of mediocres. Each day many weddings happen but this thing becomes a news because of their position.
about the rituals and poojas whatever. I personally feel its a private thing. Media should not run behind them taking their cameras to see how they look before pooja and how they look after it. cause they are going to remain the same- mediocres

yes i agree with Prasad about ritual and poojas that they did is completely their personal issue. we cant comment on that. we can say that media should not hype all these things unnecessarily. people get interest in these issue due to media covering it. otherwise no one has time to concern for what ash and abhi is doing. media is only creating issue and interest in people so that to increase TRP or newspaper sell.
About pooja and all. its INDIA, we cant completely take it away from our life. Here we see MAHURAT and PATRIKA before marrage, its our tradition, we cant easily leave that. If its just any new buy for us (like car, TV, even new home), we do TIKKA ,HAAR and pooja to it. ASH is maglik still after doing some pooja and stuff BACHHANS are acceping her. so we cant say they r completely wrong, it will take time to change entire society, and also
we have to see till what extend we have to change thats diff issue..
media should not hype these things very much. All celebrities are public icons , people must know about their life but not in this much very detail, this media should take care, by giving only required importance to each NEWS.

Hey!
yes, the issue received too much coverage.

But I would not be so hasty in terming people's customs/rituals irrational. We like to term anything that cannot be explained by our current scientific knowledge and reasoning 'irrational'. Well, science has a long way to go.. Any true scientist or connoisseur of knowledge knows that knowledge has no bounds and what we know is just a small fraction. There is a probability that these customs will be proven true by future scientists.

The point being that it would be ignorant of us to call things irrational until science actually disproves them. Till then, we should keep our mind open to all possibilities. Ofcourse, certain customs that clearly appear inhumane (like sati) do not have the right to exist until they are proven 'true' by science (For these exceptions the law should be inverse :P).
